The president of one of the largest scrap metal recycling centers in Tempe, Arizona says that this can be seen in the east valley as well. “We have been seeing a surgence of out of town clients in the past few months who are saving up months worth of scrap copper and driving it into the city to get higher pricing” said the President of I Buy Scrap Metals Trent Houg.

Copper Prices Phoenix

Scrap Copper prices in Phoenix Arizona are not too different than what you would find in other major cities across the United States. However if you travel to smaller towns just outside of Phoenix you will find the prices for scrap copper tubing, or copper wire to be significantly different. In Phoenix, Arizona one high level scrap copper wire known as “bright and shiny” number one will be purchased by scrap metal companies for as much as $3.80 per pound. The exact same amount of bright and shiny copper number 1 wire sixty miles outside of Phoenix will only yield a person $1.50 per pound at scrap metal yards or junk yards.

Copper recycling has become more prevalent over the years, One of the main reasons is that it is being used more in both computers, electronics and automobiles. There are many different kinds of copper recycling but one of the most prevalent is extracting copper from different types of wires. Some of the more prevalent types of wires are known as Insulated #1 copper wire, insulated #2 Copper wire and Romex wire. The metal recovery process from all of these types of wires is basically the same. The wire is placed on a conveyer belt, the conveyer belt feeds the wire into a hopper where the wire is collected. The wire is then sent through a pre-shredder which is a series of metal blades where it chops the wires into small nodules between 3mm and 5 mm. The nodules are then sent into the grinder, the grinder is a horizontal shaft where the grinding blades are placed on the circumference of the shaft. The grinder granulates the copper wire and the insulation covering the copper wire. During the grinding process most of the contamination is removed due to the sheer tension of the grinder. The processed cable wire is then separated into contaminated and non contaminated compartments in the air separation chambers. The contaminated portion is the outer covering and the inner fillers and strength fibers that make up the insulation of the wire, while the non contaminated portion is the pure copper wire.

Copper is one of the most highly sought after metals just behind iron and aluminum.
